Things I learned last night my friends are crazy, no one's buying your fake ID, and, oh yeah, when that hottie who's waaaay out of your league hits on you, she intends to bleed you dry. Yeah, that last one sucked. Literally.
Now my clothes are torn to shreds, I'm covered in blood, mud and seal guts. But I guess on the plus side, I feel stronger than usual. Although, I am hungry as hell and that dead seal is looking a little too delicious to be normal.
Oh man! What have I gotten myself into this time???
Thrust into a world that sets him apart from everything he once knew, Keen Panofsky's days aren't going to get any better. To find his place in a life of vampires, demons and other unworldly spirits, he'll have to battle through an age old prophecy in the hopes that he can make it through without getting himself killed. The Pale The Pale Series eBook AD Wittman Reviews
At this point it's getting hard to find new myths about vampire lore, but A.D. hit the nail on the head. This book is interesting in all of it's many twists and turns, and you're never going to guess where it's going. At the beginning I expected the normal vampire story so I was slow to read the first few pages... and then I got thrown for a loop in the best possible way... which made it impossible to stop reading. Yea, the worst part about this book is... That I couldn't put it down!! A must read for any lover of the vampire genre looking for something new to dig into.
I met the author at the Ohio Comic Con. She and her lovely assistant convinced me to buy her book and I'm glad I did. We are quickly thrust into a hidden world of mythic creatures as seen through the eyes of newbie vampire Keen. I used to rebel at any changes in the vampire mythos but now-a-days everyone seems to tweak the rules to some degree. Ms. Wittman has done the same and has her own unique ideas. In this world most of the mystical creatures exist and a few members of the "human" world know about them. We know upfront that this is the start of a series so I just accepted that I'd learn what I needed to know as Keen experienced it. After Keen learns what he has become and what he can do the story takes a leisurely pace but soon things are cooking again. The last battle scene is exciting. The characters are well developed and likable. I'm looking forward the next book.
This is a very well paced novel with characters that I fell in love with right off the bat. Tone was very good from scene to scene. All in all a wonderful read that was skillfully plotted. There were a few minor "clunky" spots in the first half of the book that I thought could have been fixed up for readability. I am now a huge fan and can not wait for the next installment.
All I can say is, "Where is the next book? I want it NOW!"
Phew, now that that is out, what I thought of the book, in a word, excellent!
What makes this book excellent? Well, I never jumped into the vampire fad because vampire fads tend to be sex laden and trite. But I was given this book with the promise to read it and found that it was the human element that I connected with. The characters are so well developed, complete with the type of music they like so you get the full feel and mood of the characters. I defiantly became engrossed enough with the characters to feel their pain and want to root them on in their struggles.
Also, there are some authors that when it comes to descriptions of things they seem to describe things down to the cellular level, and for me, that is too much description. So when I noticed while reading this book that the descriptions were well told and I could follow the characters through the streets with them and visualize things without getting lost, falling asleep, or get the feeling that a microscope was needed I was greatly pleased.
But most of all I loved the writing style. I hate books that talk TO you or preach AT you. So when I opened to the first page and found the writing style more conversational than dictatorial I was in heaven! I felt that I was there experiencing things side by side with the characters.
The story line was totally engaging and the fact that there will be more to come keeps me on the edge of my seat as I want to know what happens next to the characters that I have fallen in love with! I am intrigued with the history of the story line; most vampire books are either in the current time setting or go back to the 1800's... the fact that this book takes the vampire history back even further is fresh and opens up the historical timeline in a way that other writers wouldn't dare venture.
In short, I loved this book and can't wait for more!
I loved this book! I was late getting back to work from lunch because I couldn't put it down. This is definitely a must read!
Really enjoyed this book! I love the characters...you can really relate to them. I can't wait to find out more about Keens family history and see what happens next for Keen and T.
The Pale puts several unique and interesting twists into the traditional vampire tale. There is a great mixture of light and dark, comedy and trajedy, love and hate. Keen's perspective is nothing like I've seen an any other vampire tale. I thoroughly enjoyed it and can't wait to find out what happens next!!
